Thanks to all who helped support ArcticaRace our first winter season buying all the Side Zip SKi Pants and Race Training Shorts. We will be moving the warehouse from California to Madison WI so we can ship faster and have more room to store more Full Side Zip Ski Pants and Race Training Shorts. We will be closed for the month of May while we make the move. When we reopen in June we will have a completely new website that integrates the other parts of the Arctica family. Come visit June 1st.

Take a Ski Trip

Some of my best memories are of some of the crazy ski trips I took as a teenager. Growing up in Los Angeles we were always driving somewhere to ski. A couple of buddies and I decided to take a two week trip to visit friends in Sun Valley and Jackson Hole. Translated that means "free place to stay". Only one of us had a car which was a Dodge Colt hatchback. Two of us sat in the front while the third person had to lay on top of all the gear and boot bags in the back. Of course each of us had to have two pairs of skis. We had to strap them to the hatch in the back because the roof was caving in when we put all six on top. We drove from LA to Sun Valley in 12 hours without stopping except for the occasional pit stop. We were so burnt out from driving we could not ski the first day.

We recovered by the next day and we were treated to about 8 inched of fresh snow. This was all new for us being used to "Sierra Cement" typical of the West Coast. Conditions stayed this way for the next week. Everyday fresh snow, party at night. Sweet!!

Had a great day at the Shelley Glover Century Ride this past Saturday. If you dont know about the Shelley Glover Foundation then check it out. http://www.shelleygloverfoundation.com/ She is a real inspiration and I am glad to be part of such a great cause. Met great people all with a common love of sport and the outdoors. Got lots of good feedback from racers. Its great to hear from different people what they like and dont like. The response was quite good especially for the Full Side Zip Pants in the white print. Training Jacket was the hot jacket. That combo is what in the photo above. There was no escaping

When my son was born there was no escaping for him that he was going to ski. Hopefully he would like it as much as I do and it would be a pleasure for him instead of a chore thrust upon him by his overbearing father. I had visions of father/son trips together laughing and giggling as we schussed down the mountain at warp speed. Telling bad jokes to each other and eating whatever and whenever we wanted after taking a long soak in a jacuzzi with over chlorinated water.
Thankfully for me this dream has come true. Today I am my son's racer chaser. We spend most of our winter weekends and weeknights either training or competing at local racing events. On the off evenings I'm down in my shop doing whatever tuning or waxing that needs to be done. My wife has to come drag me out before the wax fumes kill me. I love it down there!
The highlight of each season is whatever free skiing trip we end up planning. Usually it's thrown together late in the season and we rush off to some place in search of the best late season snow. Somewhere once again we find ourselves laughing and giggling as we schuss down the mountain at warp speed. Tell bad jokes to each other and eat whatever and whenever we want after taking a long soak in a jacuzzi with over chlorinated water.

Dreaming about skiing

Right now is the worst time of year for me because I'm getting amped up for skiing but it's still months away from being a reality. Lately I've been shopping sites for all the new stuff which only makes it worse. My fix for now is to go down in my shop and sweep away the spider webs from the bench and see what stuff I need (nothing) for the coming season. Of course just because I don't need anything does not stop me from convincing myself I really do have to have more diamond files or that the helmet from last year just won't cut it again this year. There's always something better out there you've gotta have!

So now I want to do what I can to help foster growth and support families interested in skiing. As a parent of a child active in the sport I have found it difficult to purchase affordable ski clothing that is good quality. Simple things like side zip ski pants are either out of stock when I needed them or wildly expensive when they were. I see a huge amount of used stuff being passed around as families struggle to get the right gear. It should not be so difficult. This is why I started Arctica Race.

How it all started

I started skiing in the early 70's when my parents took the family to Squaw Valley for an Easter vacation. It was just about the coolest thing I had every done. I remember how in awe I was of anyone who was good. I was desperate to be like them. The clothes and the equipment were so different than anything I had known before. I was new to the West Coast having recently moved from NYC.
My first job was in the rental shop of a California ski shop called Sporthaus in Westwood Village near UCLA. That was pretty cool for a kid in high school. I loved the smell of hot wax and the sound of files sharpening the dull edges of a customers 205 cm Rossignol Stratos. I was finally part of the scene that I was so in awe of at that first trip to Squaw Valley.
It's 40 years later and I have skied every year since. I proposed to my wife on top of Mammoth Mountain. I also have a fantastic son who has adopted my passion for skiing and races with the local junior race leagues.
I love this sport.
